19th c. Berry Basket
A 19th c. berry basket in original salmon colored paint with an old varnish finish.
Constructed of scraped black ash wood and worked from the spoke base upwards. A coiled circular rim was applied at its base serving as a foot and add protection for use as reinforcement. Fine weavers of inconsistent and hand cut width make up its body structure. The rim is comprised of a double rim rib structure, both cut and shaved circular to accommodate a single coil wrapping. A quirky handle of black ash is interwoven into the body.
Remains in excellent as-descended condition. Surface qualities are ideal, rich in texture, anomalies and aged color from age and use.
New England origin. Ca. 1870. 5"W x 4 1/2"T.
