19th c. Egg Basket Ex Roger Bacon (SOLD)
A 19th c. egg basket in original deep green paint.
Constructed and woven entirely of ash wood. The rib system is comprised of two intersecting skeletal ribs and each featuring small square shafted nails to complete centric circles. A series of shaved and formed weaver ribs and interwoven into the body with thin splint weavers.
As typical of most 19th c. egg baskets, the structural design encompasses the need for carrying weight while remaining of delicate nature. A simple and useful basket seeing use around a homestead, carefully crafted to ensure long, useful life.
Remains in overall good condition with two cracked weavers and one long since gone rim wrapping, all bring consisten with age and designated use. Displays beautiful historic surface qualities with patina and heavily oxidized color.
Formerly in the collection of the late noted actor and Americana collector, Roger Bacon and seen on the front cover of the 1982 Skinner catalogue.
