19th c. Gameboard (SOLD)

19th c. Gameboard (SOLD)

A 19th c. gameboard in original black and oyster white paint with painted red sides.

Constructed in the period of scrap pine wood featuring a dado joint on its proper right side. Painted with a simple geometric array of lamp black painted squares painted on an oyster white ground. Red painted edges both compliment the color scheme of the face and serve to seal open grain of the wood.

Paint characteristics are of early organic and inorganic compounds resulting in thick, historical paint. The timeframe of its craft points to the early to mid 19th c. based on the paint formulas present.

Excellent original condition with a visual history of its life being present with light patina. A choice gameboard representing New England ingenuity and upcycling.

Charismatically small at 7 3/4"W x 9"T.

New England origin. Ca. 1820-1850.
