19th c. Mortar and Pestle (SOLD)
A 19th c. mortar and pestle in original black paint.
Constructed both of single bodies of maple wood and laghe turned on a pole lathe. The mortar is turned without decoration, profiled in a direct functional matter but with a simple but pleasing, bulbous top. The base is beautifully turned showing a myriad of lathe marks. The pestle also follows suit with a demure profile, profiled with a tapered handle.
Beautifully aged with a fine early black painted surface showing historical elements and rich textured paint with anomalies. Well above average in terms of condition, free of cracks or fissure. Scarce in color.
New England. Ca. 1830. 12"OAH, 5"W.
