19th c. Polychrome Painted Basket

A 19th C. splint basket in original polychrome paints.

Constructed entirely from ash wood, the body features a double coiled wrapped rim and over-under weavers with strong vertical stanners and a continuous bentwood handle all formed atop a twenty-five spoke base.

A system of various paints adorn the body with horizontal weavers exhibiting attractive contrasting paint colors accented with a strong bittersweet color on the rim.

Remains in an excellent state of condition and retains a true untouched surface with craquelure and bubbling from shrinkage and use that commensurates with age. An exciting and fun basket for the collector that seeks folk art, color and condition. New England. Ca. 1875 with the paint applied ca. 1900. 13"T x 10 1/2"W. PM for info.
