18th c. Cutlery Box

18th c. Cutlery Box

An 18th c. hanging cutlery box in original finished surface.

Constructed of eastern white pine wood, the backboard portrays an eccentric cutout with deep inwards upswinging lines terminating in a generously sized lilipop ornamentation. Joinery consists of a combination of early wrought iron fasteners: forged iron nails and hand wrought screws.

The focal aspect is the compass work dressing the face of the ornamentation. A six sided rosette has been laid out in organized fashion and relief carved for three-dimensional effect.

Survives in excellent as-descended condition with light wear. Surviving and intact original period finishes on utility boxes of this era is a scarcity due to the refreshments of later periods adding an exciting characteristic to this box. Stark in form with historic qualities for the collector seeking fine, untouched visual elements.

New York or New England origin. Ca. 1770-1790. 14 1/2"T x 14 1/2"W.
