19th c. Apple Basket

A 19th c. apple picking basket in original red paint.

Constructed of two different species of ash wood with an articulated swing handle. Its woven body features wide black ash wood weavers woven in cylindrical form and shared its base with a wooden bottom from which each stanner was attached via two small iron nails securing each stanner. Two separate iron straps reinforce the body, running the entire body length to its rim and in conjunction with a wooden base, make for additional strength for its use.

A white ash rim is applied and attached with early iron tack joining and features an arrow pointed lap joint. The handle is attached via an iron pin piercing its rim. Kerf marks remain visible from its forming process.

Remains in superb original condition with an extremely fine surface displaying oxidation and very light wear.

New England, likely Maine in origin. Ca. 1880. Approximately 19"T.
