19th c. Case of Drawers

19th c. Case of Drawers

A 19th c. case of pyramidal drawers in original paint decoration and varnished finish.

Constructed of pine wood with a butt joinery nailed with small iron brads. The backboard features a wonderfully curvilinear scalloped cutout aiding a visual compliment to its square and rectangular shaped drawer arrangement. All four drawers feature their original walnut knobs.

Its paint decoration is lively displaying a blend of faux birdseye maple, arranged in a flowing pattern, and abstract painting along its chamfered edges. In bold font, "1872" was wet painted along its top center casing and is surmounted by birdseye decoration.

The medial drawer displays pencil script written by its maker on the underside: "B. F. Rollins Stratham June 1872". Benjamin F. Rollins was born August 2nd, 1824 and by age 25 was listed as a laborer according to census records. A short time after he moved to live with his brother James and family to be a farmer and would work the remaining years of his life quietly on his brother's farm without occupation.

His freetime and quaint life allowed him to be able to produce this beautifully crafted case of drawers and would account for its elaborate design and decoration.

Remains in a superb state of condition with only the most miniscule amount of wear and remains free of restoration or flaw. Its painted surface is ideal with an undisturbed nature. An exceptionally fine case of drawers exuding fine elements of vibrancy, condition, form and craftsmanship.

Stratham, New Hampshire origin. Ca. June 1872. 22"W x 14"T x 11"D.
