19th c. Dog Carving

19th c. Dog Carving

A 19th c. wood carving of a sitting dog in original varnish finish.

Constructed of pine wood from the solid and carved in soft detail. Postured in a sitting position, the carving invokes the somber essence of a trained companion gleefully looking at its owner for emotions of validation and care. A relaxed tail and subdued face suggest security in its owners presence.

The underside bears initials JLH and a date of what appears to be 1848.

Retains a generous varnished finish with oxidation and age. Very good condition with a couple minor scattered historic blemishes.

Northeast origin, possibly southern Ontario. Ca. 1848. 5"L.
