19th c. Gathering Basket
A 19th c. gatherig basket in original deep windsor green pigmented paint.
Constructed in a freehand manner of ash wood. The body is squared and woven into a circular shaped rim supported by double rim ribs and finished with a single coil surmounting its rim. A single bosy notched handle is woven into the body and secured with an iron nail attaching to the rim.
A quality example of the rural craft of basmetmaking showcasing basic elements of weaving while employing some higher standards of build quality such as its notched handle and proportionally wide weavers, leaving itself to survive in excellent condition. Simple baskets for daily use around farmsteads were a necessity and this basket shows itself to be an example of the desire for utility and basic function.
Retains fabulous original paint with oxidized color and light in-period wear from use. Overall excellent condition.
Northeast origin, likely New England. Ca. 1880. 11"T.
