19th c. Gothic Revival Shelf

19th c. Gothic Revival Shelf

An exceptionally fine 19th c. hanging shelf in original black paint with a varnished finish.

Constructed from a combination of pine and maple wood. The body is profiled with elaborate scrollwork on its base portion and is profusely decorated with well executed Frisian carving with bracketing and applied ornamentation following suit.

A carved and formed star surmounted by half circular figures is a visual representation of the "Flower of Life", an ancient symbol of geometry rooted in religions.

Stylistically, this carving is a Gothic Revival rendition of carving being produced in Europe during the 15-17th C. with heavy emphasis on compass work forming geometric shapes and foliage.

Remains in overall very good original condition with minor wear, as expected with age and use. The surface quality of the varnish is ideal with texture and anomalies giving a quality visual representation of its age. Extremely stately in appearance and commands attention for its boastful form and intricate nature of labor-intensive carving.

American. Ca. 1860. 39"W x 8"D x 11 1/2"T.
