A 19th c. painted trinket box in original paint decoration.
Constructed of pine wood throughout with applied moldings that feature chamfered edges. Each molding work is attached via small iron squared shaped nails. Brass hinges attach its lid with small iron screws and still retain paint coverage.
Its lid is ornamented in paint decoration featuring diagonally placed simplistic tulips in each corner and surmount a large octagonal sided hex sign, an ethnic symbol traditionally used for expression or possibly  talismanic purposes. 
The front features a horse in stride painted in bittersweet pigmented paint and corresponds to matching figures on either side of the body but in yellow paint. 
The entirety of the box with the exception of the base contains its original varnish finish applied to protect the original red paint.
Survives in overall good condition for its age with minor as-expected wear from handling and use and contains a fabulous painted surface laiden with historic anomalies and crazing. 
A charming box with an uplifting presence and charming size at a mere 6 3/8"W.
