19th c. Native American Elder Cane

A late 19th c. Native American elder's cane in original black paint.

Constructed from the branch of a maple tree and dressed by hand to form its shape. A handle at its top is pierced with a large hanging hole, likely to accommodate a strap. Terminating the opposing end of its handle is a carved effigy of an eagly with a partially drawn mouth. Tiny iron pins were nailed to the head to form its eyes.

The ferrule at the end of the shaft is delightful and perfectly mirrors the organic craft of this cane...it is formed from a .38 caliber bullet casing, a clever and useful utilization of material.

Remains in excellent original condition with some signs of very light wear being consistent with its age and use.

American. Ca. 1890. 36 1/2"L.
