19th c. Ontario Farmers Hat Mold
A 19th c. farmers hat mold in original surface.
Constructed of a two piece design with the crown attached to the brim mold via small iron nail joining and each lathe turned to produce its respective profile. The crown features an assortment of early paper nailed to itself for sizing felt hats. A concavery shaped profile of the brim produces the upward leaning brim of the hats produced. The original hanging screw remains with wire attachment for storage when not in use.
This hat mold produced the farming hats occassionally seen in paintings and drawings produced in eastern and northeastern Ontario.
Survives in an excellent state of original condition, rarely seen on hat molds with undisturbed elements such as sizing paper and perfectly acquired patina.
Ontario origin. Ca. 1885. 12 3/4"W.
