19th c. Sioux Childs Mocassins

A pair of Sioux childs moccasins in original as-found and as-descended condition.

Constructed from deer skin hide and embroidered in polychrome trade beadwork. An applied sole and its beadword are attached via sinew.

A lazy stitch was employed for attaching strings of beads to the body. Geometric shapes of broken mountains and bags are laid out symmetrically. Red dyed cotton thread ornaments the heel collar and is attached with black cotton string.

Both survive in excellent condition with one minor string loss to one shoe near its flap.

Likely Eastern Sioux. Ca. 1890. 4 1/2"L.
