19th c. Spice Compote

19th c. Spice Compote

A fabulously turned 19th c. spice compote in a pigmented varnish over original bittersweet colored paint.

Constructed from a body of lathe turned cherry wood. The bowl was turned heavy in its thickness, producing itself to be free from shrinkage and cracks and retaining original shape. Sitting below its bowl on a short stem is a very robust footed base with triple arched turnings.

Proportionally stately with heaviness, quality, and function kept close in mind by its original maker.

Remains in superlative original condition with an exceptionally ideal varnished finish with crazing and craquelure.

Northeast origin, possibly CT. Ca. 1800. 3 3/4"T x 4 3/4"W.
