19th c. Sugar Container

A 19th c. covered treen sugar container in original red and black paint.

Constructed of lathe turned maple wood. The bowl is profiled to accomodate a proportionally appropriate amount of sugar with its size and rests above a widely tapered stem. A complimenting foot mirrors finely turned incising decoration. Two freehand drawn horizontal pinstripes decorate the exterior. The matching lid retains a solid coat of original black paint and displays a sizeable and simply turned finial.

Black paint laid over red with varnish has created an impeccable color combination. Retains an exceptional paint surface with visual signs of historical descent.

Overall excellent condition with one very old minor loss to the foot being consistent with age and use.

Northeast origin, likely Pennsylvania. Ca. 1850. 5"T
