19th c. Wall Pocket Basket

19th c. Wall Pocket Basket

A 19th c. wall pocket basket in old pewter grey paint over original red primer.

Constructed entirely from ash wood with a half melon shaped body and tall hand shaved handle protruding from the body. A frontal raised rib acts as a bumper and reinforces structurally.

Construction follows the traditional form and style of basketry attributed to the Shenandoah Valley region or Virginia surrounding area.

Survives in an excellent as-descended state of condition with extremely fine historic surface qualities.

Shenandoah Valley or VA origin. Ca. 1875. 15 1/2"T.
