19th c. Wall Pocket Basket (SOLD)

19th c. Wall Pocket Basket (SOLD)

A 19th c. splint woven wall pocket in original Spanish brown paint with oyster white highlights.

Constructed from black ash in its entirety. Woven from the base up, the body consists of a rectangular bottom worked upwards to form a rounded opening. The rim is worked with a single coiled rim wrap, reinforced with double coiling at the rim ribs for added support. Its handle of bentwood design is woven into the rear of the body and features blocked and tapered terminal ends.

Extremely light wear suggests its original use as a pocket for storage of weaving materials.

Excellent original condition with historic paint history and visual signs of patina.

North Carolina origin. Ca. 1880. 14 1/2"W.
