Coach Painted Pantry Boxes

A scarce stack of 19th c. pantry boxes in original paints.

Each box is of typical New England design, made of bentwood maple and secured with small iron tack joining. The lids and bases are comprised of pine wood, laid out with compass work and cut by hand and secured with wooden pins.

A laid ground of an off oyster white serves as a base coat and foundation for their respective finishes. Each box is ornately ornamented with delicate filigree and sprigs in green paint and features its own respective label for contents in red paint and shadowed in green.

The display as a stack is striking....bright and colorful, displaying artful skill of hand in delicate proportions. Labeled boxes as such are scarcely found on the marketplace with matching stacks being a rarity.

All survive structurally sound and in good condition with one box featuring an old, in-period loss to its lower body. A few scattered, ubiquitous chips remain from shrinkage in two lids, a common occurence being consistent with age. All retain phenomenal and consistent paint surface qualities.

New England origin. Ca. 1860. 13 3/4"T x 8 1/2"W at its base.
