Early Bugbear Coconut Flask (SOLD)
An early coconut bugbear flask in original pewter grey paint.
Made from the emptied and hollowed interior of a coconut. A single hole was bored at the coconuts' functional pore and accompanied by a pine wood plug with a tapered finial. Finished by a fabulous dry coat of period correct pewter colored paint.
Typically procured and fashioned by sailors as a souvenir from voyages to the West Indies.
Scarcely found of American origin and even more rare to be found with the original matching plug. Remains in overall good condition with a large structural crack glued securely. Retains excellent paint surface characteristics.
Northeast origin, probably New England or Maritimes. Ca. 1800-1830. 5"T.
