Early Cribbage Board

Early Cribbage Board

A late 18th or early 19th c. cribbage board surviving in original as-found condition.

Constructed of mahogany and profiled with a lolipop shaped cutout. Individual playing holes are hand drilled and are irregular in appearance. The reverse displays an unusual and quaint feature...its own tiny slide lid pocket of walnut wood for storage of its playing pegs. Included are 4 pegs, three of wood and one of bone.

Denoted on the reverse is its owners name "S Knox", an old family name with roots in Europe and the United States in North Carolina. The legal name without a middle name was old tradition until the year 1800 or 1801, a British standard and helps date the board.

Survives in mint condition with the original slide lid and shows quality patina from historic use.

American. Ca. 1790-1820. 8"T
