Early Utility Box
An early hanging utility box in orignal unfinished surface.
Made from pine wood throughout. The backboard is profiled with a paddle shape backboard ornamented with a lolipop cutout. A shallow pocket with ogee shaped sides is attached via a series of small hand forged iron nails. The frontal plank is attached in similar fashion and boasts a chamfered edge for accessing its interior.
The backboard shows an interesting campaign of history....a large series of cut marks from food preparation are present both on the interior and exterior, suggesting secondary use as a cutting board.
Original use of this box is for debate but likely saw some sort of use in a hearth setting.
Remains in overall excellent condition and wears superb surface elements with heavily oxidized wood coloring and patina.
New Brunswick origin. Ca. 1820. 16"T x 7 1/4"W x 2 1/2"D
