Eccentric Dog Carving

Eccentric Dog Carving

An eccentric wooden carving of a standing dog in original polychrome paints.

Constructed of pine wood from the solid and mounted to an ovular base. The dogs body is painted in black over oyster white and is wonderfully posed, displaying fully sprawled legs and standing on hind legs begging. The relaxed posture is extremely endearing, mouth wide with excitement and looking to be validated by the carver with outstretched paws carved with toes. Its base in green with a red ogee band and gilt edge is carved with grooves adding depth and dimension. The dog is attached via glue and a single iron screw.

Retains a wonderfully complex painted surface with indication that the carver was not extremely talented but rather enthusiastic.

Likely carved by someone to commemorate a once loved loyal companion.

Pennsylvania origin. Ca. 1920. 5"T.
