Exceptional Taghkanic Apple Basket

A 19th c. Taghkanic apple basket in original deep green paint.

Constructed of ash wood in the most robust manner. The body is woven upwards from the base as is seen in typicsl Taghkanic fashion and features a convex i terior for weight distribution of contents. A very heavy rim is reinforced with a double coil of rim lashings and abnormally thick rim ribs. A coiled bottom comprising two diagonally coiled lashes finishes the base and provides a sturdy and secure foot for use, preventing damage to the underside when set down with filled contents.

The handle is attached to a D ring which is woven into the body. Made from a single body of ash wood and dressed with a thick handle grab supporting steel weight when full. Both handle terminations are especially pleasing, lending the contour of the blocked section to the handle grab creating an intentional and aesthetic transition. Each block is nicely secured with copper tacks.

Taghkanic baskets have long since been revered for quality, practical design, simplicity, and interesting historic background. Superlative condition, exceptional paint characteristics and history, scarcely seen features and appreciation for craftsmanship are all the most notable qualities to be mentioned.

The finest basket we have offered and is likely one of the best Taghkanic swing handle baskets existing of its kind. For the collector seeking a best in basketry and paint.
