Federal Cutlery Tray
An exceptional early double lidded cutlery tray in original varnished surface.
Constructed of cherry wood with eastern white pine secondary and joined with fine dovetailed corners. A chamfered and nailed bottom is secured with early hand cut iron nails. Each lid is formed from a single body of wood with a small formed tab on either end and let into its sides. A tall hand grab pierces the top profiling a heart.
Beautifully shaped with canted sides and prominent upswing adorned with quietly sized pointed ears. Its maker utilized fine craftsmanship which can be seen in its fine dovetails, tall divider and chamfered bottom.
Retains an extremely fine surface exhibiting signs of crazing and craquelure with rich warm color. Recognition of its craftsmanship and value has allowed its descent through history with extremw care resulting in superlative condition, a trait scarcely seen in cutlery trays of the period.
