Late 18th c. Redware Jug
A late 18th or early 19th c. redware jug in original condition.
Thrown on the wheel and potted in a deeply jugular form. Features a wide rimmed mouth, robust in nature and an applied ribbed handle, left with an impressed thumb print on its lower end.
An unusual glaze is applied in chocolate color over a black manganese and finished with lighting dripping splotched dots. American redware of this Germanic form and production has been found and attributed to the southeastern part of Massachusetts based on archeological finds and historic provenance of similar glazes.
Remains in overall very good condition with old, possibly in-the-making chips to its base. Rare in color.
Southeastern Massachusetts. Ca. 1790-1820. 5 1/2"T.
