Miniature Painted Basket
An early 20th c. miniature willow work basket in original putty colored paint.
Constructed of a woven reed body forned freehand with the base being of plywood pine. An arched handle is interwoven into its body and is finished with rattan wrapping for finished appearance complimenting its plaited rim.
Likely produced in Pennsylvania for a small child by an individual regularly practicing producing basketry. Willow work has had a long standing history of utilitization in the United States by Germanic communities settling in states such as Pennsylvania, New York, Iowa and New England. Seldom seen are true miniature wickerwork baskets, especially examples in pristine condition.
Remains in superlative original condition with a fine aged surface showing historic coloring and light patina.
