Nursery Sign

Nursery Sign

A late 19th c. or early 20th c. wooden sign in original oyster white and charcoal black paint.

Constructed of a single plank of pine wood. Bold oyster white font is painted by hand with large volutes and is laid on a charcoal black colored ground. Each volute features a "cats-eye" design integrated into itself, a concept of design work from the 19th c. and popular amongst early designs seen on English Mocha ware. The back retains only a single ground color and is unfinished.

Retains phenomenal paint surfaces to both colors and displays light historic wear. Overall excellent original condition very little paint thinning.

Nursery signs of the period are uncommon making this a fitting and choice sign for the collector seeking scarcity, human craft, condition and visual appreciation.

American, possibly Southern. Ca. 1890-1910. 71"L
