Rare 19th c. Individual Salt
A rare 19th c. table salt cellar in original unfinished surface.
Constructed from a small block of lathe turned maple wood with a profile consisting of a step turned footed base with an ogee shaped stem supporting a bowl with a generous sized lip. The base displays beautifully written script in pencil stating: "Present Jan 20, 1853 From Friend".
Masterfully turned as evident by its size. Hand written cursive script with attention to detail denotes special care as a gift from one person to another. A wonderful piece of treenware and iconic example of early New England crafstmanship.
