Rare 19th c. Individual Salt

Rare 19th c. Individual Salt

A spectacularly small 19th c. table salt cellar in original unfinished surface.

Constructed from a small block of lathe turned maple wood with a profile consisting of a step turned footed base and ogee shaped stem supporting a bowl with a substantially proportionate sized lip. The base displays beautifully written script in pencil stating: "Present Jan 20, 1853 From Friend".

Masterfully turned as evident by its size. Hand written cursive script denotes the likelyhood of this being a gift from a close associate. A wonderfully modeled piece of early New England treenware representing fine craftsmanship.

New england origin. Ca. 1830-1853. 1 1/4"T
