Small 19th c. Candle Mat
A 19th c. diminutive size candle mat in original as-found condition.
Stitched on mesh in Berlin woolwork with a fringe wool border in dyed red, white (faded from yellow), and cream colors. The interior features a nicely stitched bird pirched on a tree branch and surmounted by a multicolored herringbone stitched border.
The back is lined, consisting of a glazed cotton backing stitched to the body.
Overall excellent condition with a few minor areas of stitching loss (as shown). Remains vibrant and accents well with Federal period accessories. A quaint size at 5" square.
Northeast origin, possibly New England. Ca. 1830-1860.
